The Onion Router makes the spies cry

Privacy isn't a crime. It's a necessity. And in the digital age, it's become something far more complex than simply closing your curtains or locking your front door. Every website you visit, every search you conduct, every click you make leaves a trail. Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) watches. Advertisers track. Governments collect. And given the history and mechanics of the Tor Network, it offers both a paradox and a solution.

When the State Creates Its Own Opposition

The Tor Project represents one of the most fascinating paradoxes in digital privacy. It's a creation of the state that ended up becoming one of the few effective shields against the state's surveillance. 

Tor is free and open source software that, if used carefully, allows its users to browse online with the closest thing to perfect anonymity that can be practically achieved at scale. Its protocols were developed by the US Naval Research Laboratory throughout the mid-1990s, and in 2003 it was released to the public—on whom its functionality depends. This is because Tor operates on a cooperative community model, relying on tech-savvy volunteers all over the globe who run their own Tor servers out of their basements, attics and garages. By routing its users' Internet traffic through these servers, Tor does the same job of protecting that traffic as the CIA's "non-attributable research" system, with the primary difference being that Tor does it better, or at least more efficiently.

With the Tor protocol, your traffic is distributed and bounced around through randomly generated pathways from Tor server to Tor server, with the purpose being to replace your identity as the source of communication with that of the last Tor server in the constantly shifting chain. Virtually none of the Tor servers, which are called "layers," know the identity of, or any identifying information about, the origin of the traffic. And in a true stroke of genius, the one Tor server that does know the origin (the very first server in the chain) does not know where that traffic is headed. 

Put more simply: the first Tor server that connects you to the Tor network, called a gateway, knows you're the one sending a request, but because it isn't allowed to read that request, it has no idea whether you're looking for memes or information about a protest, and the final Tor server that your request passes through, called an exit, knows exactly what's being asked for, but has no idea who's asking for it.

This layering method is called onion routing, which gives Tor its name: The Onion Router. The joke is that trying to surveil the Tor Network makes spies want to cry. Therein lies the project's irony: here was a US military-developed technology that made cyberintelligence simultaneously harder and easier, applying hacker know-how to protect the anonymity of the intelligence community but only at the price of granting the same anonymity to adversaries and to average users across the globe.

Your Web Browsing Needs Protection

Every time you connect to the internet, you're exposing yourself. Your ISP sees every website you visit. The websites themselves log your IP address, device fingerprint, and browsing patterns. Third-party trackers follow you across the web, building detailed profiles of your interests, habits, and behaviour. Governments tap into these data streams, collecting massive databases of who visits what, when, and how often.

This isn't paranoia. It's documented reality. Data breaches expose how much information companies collect and how poorly they protect it. And increasingly, simply visiting the "wrong" website—whether it's reporting on political protests, researching health conditions, or reading about topics your government considers sensitive—can have real consequences.

Your browsing history reveals intimate details about your life: your political views, medical concerns, financial situation, relationships, fears, and aspirations. This information has value—to advertisers who want to manipulate you, to employers who might discriminate against you, to governments that might target you, to criminals who might exploit you.

Architecture Matters

The genius of Tor's onion routing teaches us something crucial: effective privacy must be built into the architecture from the beginning. It can't be bolted on later as an optional feature. This stands in stark contrast to how most of the modern web operates.

The commercial internet was built on a surveillance business model. Social media platforms need to track your behavior to keep you engaged. Privacy was never part of the design—it would have interfered with the profit model.

Tor represents the opposite philosophy. From the ground up, it's designed to make surveillance difficult, expensive, and unreliable. The protocol assumes that observers will try to track you and builds in protections at every layer. No single point of failure. No central authority that can be compromised or coerced. No database of user activity waiting to be breached or subpoenaed.

This architectural approach to privacy matters because it's not dependent on trust. You don't have to trust that your VPN provider isn't logging your activity. You don't have to trust that your browser's "incognito mode" actually protects you (it doesn't—it only prevents local history storage). You don't have to trust that websites will respect your preferences. With Tor, the protection comes from the math and the distributed design, not from promises or policies.

Privacy Requires Community

One of Tor's most elegant aspects is its reliance on community. The network only functions because thousands of volunteers worldwide run relay nodes (servers), contributing bandwidth and computational resources to protect the privacy of strangers. No single entity controls the network. 

This cooperative ethos stands in sharp contrast to the corporate surveillance model that dominates the modern internet. When you use Google, or any of the major platforms, you're the product. Your data is extracted, analysed, and sold. Privacy is sacrificed for convenience, and you have no say in the matter because the entire system runs on centralized servers under corporate control.

When you use Tor, you're not just protected by the network—you become part of it. Your traffic helps provide cover for others. If you run a relay, you're directly contributing to global privacy infrastructure. The more people who use Tor, the stronger and more effective it becomes. This is privacy through collective action, not privacy through paying a service provider and hoping they keep their promises.

The network's resilience comes from its distributed nature. Governments have tried to block Tor. Intelligence agencies have tried to compromise it. But because no single entity controls it, and because it's open source software that anyone can inspect and verify, attempts at sabotage or surveillance face mathematical and organizational obstacles that centralized services don't have.

Discretion Matters

There's a reason those who are pro-privacy emphasize OPSEC (operational security) alongside technical tools. Using Tor protects your browsing traffic, but advertising that you use Tor can make you a target for additional scrutiny. In some countries, using encryption or privacy tools is treated as suspicious behaviour.

The goal isn't to eliminate your digital presence entirely—that's impractical for most people. The goal is to control what you reveal, to whom, and when. It's about making surveillance expensive and difficult rather than free and automatic.

Tor provides the technical infrastructure for this kind of selective visibility. But technology alone isn't enough. You also need to think about your behaviour, your metadata, and the patterns you create. Even with perfect encryption, if you always access certain sites at the same times, always from the same general location, always with the same browsing patterns, you create a fingerprint that can potentially identify you.

Getting Started with Tor

If you're serious about web browsing privacy, here's what you should consider:

Use the Tor Browser. The easiest way to access the Tor network is through Tor Browser, a modified version of Firefox that routes all traffic through Tor by default. Download it from the official Tor Project website—never from third parties.

Understand the limitations. Tor protects your anonymity, but it doesn't make you invincible. Don't log into accounts that are tied to your real identity while using Tor. Don't download files that might contain identifying information. Don't enable browser plugins that could leak your real IP address.

Be patient. Tor is slower than regular browsing because your traffic is bouncing through multiple relays worldwide. This is the price of anonymity. Accept it and adjust your expectations accordingly.

Consider your threat model. Are you protecting against your ISP seeing your browsing? Against websites tracking you across the web? Against government surveillance? Different threats require different levels of caution. Tor protects against all of these, but your behaviour matters too.

Don't mix Tor and non-Tor browsing. If you browse normally and then switch to Tor to visit specific sites, you're creating a pattern that could potentially identify those sites as being of particular interest to you. Consider using Tor for all your browsing, or at least for broad categories of activity, not just specific sensitive sites.

Run a relay if you can. If you have the technical capability and bandwidth, consider contributing to the Tor network by running a relay. You're helping protect the privacy of the entire community. Even a middle relay (which doesn't see destination sites) contributes meaningfully to network capacity and security.

Verify everything. Because Tor is so important for privacy, it's a target for malicious actors who might distribute fake versions. Always download from official sources and verify signatures when possible.

The Responsibility of Privacy

Privacy requires effort. It requires learning new tools, changing habits, accepting inconveniences. It's easier to use Chrome than Tor Browser. It's easier to click "Accept All Cookies" than to configure your privacy settings. It's easier to use services that require no thought about data protection than to seek out privacy-respecting alternatives.

But ease isn't the same as safety. Convenience isn't the same as security. The Tor Network exists because some people decided that privacy was worth the effort, worth the complexity, worth the sacrifice of speed and ease-of-use. They decided that the ability to browse the web without constant surveillance was valuable enough to justify the inconvenience. Privacy isn't about having something to hide—it's about having something to protect. Your autonomy. Your personal security. Your freedom to access information and communicate without permission or surveillance.

The surveillance state wants you to believe that privacy is dead, that resistance is futile, that you should just accept that everything you do online will be monitored. But the existence and continued development of Tor proves otherwise. Privacy is possible.

Standing for Privacy in Public

The irony is that the people who most need privacy are often the ones least equipped to achieve it. The dissidents living under authoritarian regimes. The activists challenging powerful interests. The journalists protecting sources. The ordinary citizens trying to escape abusive relationships or oppressive systems.

Privacy isn't a crime. It's a necessity. And in 2026, as surveillance technology becomes more sophisticated and digital privacy comes under increasing attack, the lessons from the Tor Network have never been more relevant.

The tools exist. The community exists. The irony persists: military technology designed for spy agencies now protects ordinary people from those same agencies. The onion router makes the spies cry. And that's exactly as it should be.
